Two letters left in the A-Z Challenge. I’m sure you figured out my Y would stand for Yankee Stadium by now. Right? I would hope so, considering I’m from the Bronx and happen to be a New York Yankees fan! 🙂 I believe I’ve posted that before.
My dad used to take me to Yankee Stadium pretty often, not to see the Yankees though. He wasn’t a baseball fan. Papi was a European football fan, or soccer, as we call it here in the states.
Back in the day when we were still living on Jerome Avenue, he’d take me to see the New York Cosmos, who played out of Yankee Stadium during their 1976 season. Pelé was their star player and me and Papi were huge fans.
We used to go to the park across the street and practice our soccer moves while Mami used to sit on a blanket under a tree and watch. Not many of my friends were into soccer much, so it was only me and Papi for a while until we made some new friends at that very same park. That’s a story for another day.
Don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying I didn’t see my Yanks, I did… Just not with Papi. Every so often during baseball season, I’d be offered an extra ticket in the bleachers if Mami gave the okay. It was pretty sweet living walking distance to the stadium.
Did you know that the following people were born in the Bronx?
- Yannetti, Robert – Actor, Assistant Director, Director (1953-2011)
- Yellen, Sherman – Playwriter, Screenwriter
Are you a fan of baseball or soccer? Who’s your team? Do you, or did you ever play at all?
That’s cool you got to see some games. I’ve always liked the Yankees.

Not into sports Eva. However, Matt was big on soccer and even tried out for a big team in the UK. Unfortunately he tore the cartilage in his knee so that put him out of professional soccer completely. This was way before the big salaries anyway. At the time the top English player was only earning about £8 a week, maybe about $20. Possibly a bit more. He played sports of one kind or another all his life.

That’s a shame, GMD. I still like soccer and watch the World Cup from time to time when it’s on. Other than that, I’m more into baseball and American football. I still watch gymnastics and figure skating during the Olympics, though. 🙂

Played soccer as a kid up until high school and I watch World Cup when it’s on. Not much of a baseball fan. I grew up in an American Football house. Specifically, NY Giants. Very cool that you lived close to the stadium. Means parking wasn’t an issue. 🙂

Nice. I watch the World Cup when it’s on too. I didn’t get into American Football until a few years back (unless it was for a football pool). Now my team is the Baltimore Ravens. Go figure. Some New Yorker…

My dad used to go to the Giants games when they played at Yankee Stadium. So I grew up in an American Football house, but one where both kids played soccer. My dad assistant coached my sister’s team too. A lot of sports went on around here. Ravens isn’t too bad, I guess.

I’ll take Giants over Jets any day of the week. Just sayin’.

I’d love to be a fly on the wall during one of THOSE games. G vs. J.

It’s typically very civil. Though one cousin married an Eagles fan. I avoid the topic on that one.

I didn’t. Been so busy with the promos for Sleeper, preparing Ichabod Brooks for a June 1st release, outlining for another Legends book, and starting in on a paranormal thriller novella. Surprised my head hasn’t spun off my neck.
