Va va voom! V in the A-Z Challenge! I remember going to Van Cortlandt Park a few times whenever Mandy’s babysitter and her family threw birthday parties or family picnics in the summer.
I met her through our mutual neighbor when Mandy was nearly three months old. A few months later, T introduced me to her brother and we hit it off. We spent nearly 6 1/2 years together. So, I was kinda family.
Anyway, there would be no less than 20 people at these gatherings, and sometimes there would be as many as 60, depending on the occasion.
In addition to all the pot-lucked food (roast pork, arroz con gandules, potato and macaroni salads, etc.), there was an area reserved for barbecue. Two guys were charged with manning the BBQ station.
Most of the guys would play football, catch, or whatever with the kids, and the ladies would set up picnic tables, blankets, food, drinks, snacks, etc. Of course, we also did any and all decorating! 😀
Talk about good times…
Did you know the following people were born in the Bronx?
- Viterelli, Joe – Actor (1937-2004)
- Villar, Elliot – Actor
- Vale, Jerry – Singer, Actor (1930-2014)
Any memories you’d care to share from your favorite park or picnic area? Do you love potlucks as much as I do?
I can’t honestly say I ever remember going to a picnic. I guess I must have done at some time but then the weather in England was not really conducive to such activities. We used to go to barbecues at friend’s places or we would hold a pig pickin’ at our home in North Carolina. Does that count?

That most definitely counts, GMD. If there’s a yard, grass, and any kind of tables, I count it. 😀 Muah!

Never been there, but my friend from the Bronx jogs there. In fact, the forest-y background of my blog is one of his pictures from Van Cortlandt.

Lol, sorry. Short version slang I picked up meaning: ‘I can’t believe that picture is from Van Cortlandt Park…’

I played with the filters to make it greener. He took it during fall, so it was a little drab.

Amazing job. I would’ve never guessed V.C. Park.

It’d sound more like, ‘Gettout!’ – one word. I’m full of useless bits of information.
