Hey all! Time for K in the A-Z Challenge ! I’m sure most of you aren’t aware of this tidbit, but there’s an old armory in the Bronx called the Kingsbridge Armory. Click on the name to read more. It’s also known as the Eighth Regiment Armory, and possibly the largest armory in the world.
It’s been empty about a decade, occasionally used for boxing matches and film sets (I Am Legend), but its future will be as a national ice skating arena.
I remember walking past it on my way to school when I did my stint at Lehman College. It’s HUGE!! I’m sorry I never saw the inside. < Smacks self >
Speaking of Kingsbridge Road: One time at band camp… Seriously. Once after a big snowstorm while attempting to cross Kingsbridge Road, I slipped on a huge patch of black ice and slid halfway across the road butt first. I had boots on, but not the kind I needed. Damn fashion boots… I couldn’t get up to save my life. I had God to thank for my safety because no one was around (embarrassing) and no cars were coming (highly unusual for a busy road). I wound up having to slide myself the rest of the way across the street (mostly slush) until I found snow to give me traction.
Posting a little tribute to the late 105th Mayor of New York, Edward I. Koch, who was also born in the Bronx. It’s because I once had the pleasure of meeting him while visiting the City. He was TALL! Not only that, he was friendly and easy to talk to. We spent a good 15 minutes in conversation. I didn’t have the heart to tell him I’d moved out of the City. I’ve met several movie stars and a singer or two, but Mr. Koch impressed me with his sincerity. His Wikipedia profile states he used to call himself a “liberal with sanity”. Click on his name to read a little more about him.
Did you know that the following people were born in the Bronx?
- Klein, Calvin – Fashion Designer
- Koch, Edward I. – Lawyer, Politician, Political Commentator, Reality TV Arbitrator, Movie Critic
- Kirkwood, Gene – Film Producer
- Korzen, Annie – Actress, Writer
Do you think I learned my lesson that day on Kingsbridge Road? How’s your challenge going?
Sounds like an interesting place to visit. I attended a party at our armory in Nashville back in the 90s. I was too young to appreciate it! (Especially since I attended while working for a PR firm and our job was to escort Hank Aaron on his visit here. Youth is wasted on the young–I had no idea what a once-in-a-lifetime experience that was.)

Did you learn? I never wore fashion boots even when I was your age. At least not in snow and ice. Calvin Klein I know about of course.

I learned for a little while, but then things become a blur and then somehow mishaps are ‘forgotten’. Sigh. Sorry about the late response, but I’ve been behind, so I’m playing catch-up. Love ya! Eva

From what I’ve read about Mayor Koch, he was a man with more wisdom than most. I think he’s to be applauded.

I had to chuckle a little at your butt-sliding story. But I’m glad you didn’t break anything. It would’ve been more embarrassing if people were around to see you fall because of those fashion boots. lol

You’re not kidding! 🙂 Sorry for the delay; I’m playing catch up over here. Hugs.

Ouch! I felt that skid on the ice and even got a bruise. I’d still wear the fashion boots although since I broke my foot, I’ve been wearing joggers. It’s been months now and no end in sight.
I have enough falls without contending with ice. I think I’d permanently be in plaster.
