BOOK BLURB:

One month ago, Charlotte Vuk—Charlie—was living in a small town in Oregon with her mother, completely unaware she was next in line for alpha to a werewolf pack so steeped in tradition and rules that they banished her mother 17 years ago for being “the other woman.” Now, Charlie is here in Paradise to meet a family she never knew she had. And to compete for a title she never wanted in the first place.

Regan Vuk needs to be alpha—and fast. Her father has completely lost his mind; promising his daughter’s hand in marriage to their worst enemy in exchange for a peace the vampires ruined when they killed Regan’s mom is crazy. Regan needs to unseat him and bring order back to her people. Even if it means hurting Charlie in the process.

Charlie doesn’t understand why everyone hates the vampires so much. So far, Owen’s done nothing but help her. He’s the only friend she has, the only one who has taken the time to get to know her. But Owen isn’t the only one who sees her, and soon both girls realize there’s someone else out there against the idea of another Vuk becoming alpha. It might even be the same person who killed Regan’s mom. When they discover a vampire’s scent on their tail, Regan isn’t surprised they’re in danger.

For Charlie, it’s beginning to feel as if her world is crumbling in around her. For Regan, it’s just another day in Paradise.

MY REVIEW:

Charlotte (Charlie) Vuk spent most of her life living among humans with her mother until she was taken away by members of her father’s pack in the middle of the night. Now she’s trying to adjust to living life as a member of the pack, with the father she never knew and a sister she didn’t know existed. On top of everything else, she has feelings for one of the werewolves enemy – vampire prince Owen Rossi.

Could things get any worse? I’m glad you asked. They most certainly can.

Charlie has to fight her sister Regan for the role of pack Alpha; it’s tradition. No one, including Regan thinks she’s capable of winning. Does she even want to? Charlie and Regan are finally building a relationship, but there’s this huge elephant in the closet – the fight. She even offered to bypass fighting and take the role as Beta, but that can’t happen. She’d be ostracized and disowned from the pack forever.

After much thought, Charlie decides that she will fight – but only because everyone thinks she can’t. Including her own sister. Not only that, the winner has to marry Prince Owen Rossi! You’ll never guess who helps train her. 🙂

Throughout all this madness, Regan is sure that someone in the Rossi clan is responsible for the death of her Alpha mother, whose position her and Charlie will now have to fight for. Charlie is not so sure about that when she comes across evidence that there might be a traitor among the werewolves.

This was a well written second part to the three-part novella series. The characters were all fleshed out well and I got to know more about several of the characters. There are two blossoming romances here, one that’s considered forbidden love, and another that sparks from a childhood friendship.

I felt for Charlie in so many ways because she was such an outcast. Few of the pack paid her mind, and it was only Regan who came to her defense. The bonding between the two girls was clear despite the heavy cloud of the impending fight looming over them. The authors did a great job trying to bring the girls together while keeping the tension there.

I noticed minimal spelling or grammatical errors. I highly recommend this as a young adult paranormal read. It’s exciting and clean.

Book Blurb

Seventeen year-old Regan Vuk has lived her whole life under the shadow of her future: the pack alpha. She is fast, smart, and determined. According to her own pack members, she is a shoo-in. But Regan’s dad has a secret.

Seventeen year-old Charlie spent her adolescence drifting from place to place with a mother desperate to hide her illegitimate daughter from the unforgiving reality of pack dynamics. All Charlie has ever wanted is to know her father–and the family that’s been kept from her all these years. But most of all, she wants a place to belong in the world. Where she doesn’t have to pretend she can’t sprout fur and paws at will.

When Charlie finds out the only way to fit in with her new family is to defeat her long-lost sister for the role of alpha, she refuses. That is until she learns that the strange and alluring vampire she’s befriended, Owen, is the same vampire prince that’s been promised the winner.
Regan has no doubt that, although she loathes the vampires, it will be her who “wins” Owen.

Only problem: Charlie’s already fallen for him.

My Review:

Living a nomadic life with her mom for as long as she can remember, 17-year-old Charlie doesn’t know what it’s like to ‘fit in’; she never made friends. Mom spoke little of her father, so she learned to let it be.

Her mom taught her how to shift into her wolf form at will since she was young, but always warned her that if she sensed any other shifters – turn and run; they’re just bad. That’s all she told her. Charlie splurges on a wolf run going home from a school dance, and senses something ‘off’ when she gets there. She sneaks in to the house and finds her mother in her room, in tears. All she can say is, ‘I’m so, so sorry’, before the blackness hits.

Charlie wakes up confused, angry, scared, and in a strange place. The next thing she knows, she is introduced to her father, and Regan Vuk, her step-sister. Before the girls can become acquainted and begin to bond, they’re told they must fight for the seat as pack alpha. Charlie’s spent her entire life among humans. Can she do this?

Charlie decides to run away, even if they bring her back over and over. During her run, she meets and is almost tackled by vampire Owen Rossi in the forest. There’s something about him…

If I go on any more I’ll be giving away spoilers, and I don’t do that. I really enjoyed this first installment. The story flowed really well and the characters were nicely fleshed out. I like the various plots intermingled in the story; it raises my anticipation for the next book in the series. I did notice a minimal number of spelling errors, but nothing that would take away from the story.

Overall, this is a great Paranormal / Young Adult read, and I recommend it anyone who likes werewolves/vampire stories.

Heather Hildenbrand and SM Reine – BITTERROOT

Hey everyone! I just got back a couple of days ago from a long birthday weekend with my daughter. Can’t believe I hit the BIG 50 on the 13th! I’ll post more about it later on this week.

Today I’m excited to post the cover reveal for BITTERROOT, the new book by Heather Hildenbrand and SM Reine. Coming Sept 2015!!

I’ve already read several of Heather and SM’s works and enjoyed them. I’m looking forward to reading the #Bitterrootseries and will definitely be reviewing it soon.

Until next post…

Book Review – The Thirteenth Floor Collection -Christine Rains

Hey bloggers! I know, I know. It’s been a while since I’ve come out and done a book review. I’ve read so many since my last one, I haven’t been able to write out them out yet. I need to get cracking; it’s a long list. :/ So I’m going to start today.

(*Note: I initially read The Marquis as a free purchase on Amazon, but it was so good, I purchased the collection.) I based my review on the collection.

This review is for: The 13th Floor Complete Collection

Wonderfully written series.  Five Stars from me. *****

Six supernatural tenants
Living in a haunted apartment building
On a floor that doesn’t exist.

Six novellas telling their tales.

A retired demon acquires a price on his head.
A werewolf is hunted by her pack.
A modern day dragonslayer misses his target.
A harpy challenges Zeus for the soul of the man she loves.
A vampire is obsessed with a young woman he can’t find.
And a banshee falls in love with someone who’s death she has seen in a vision.

All the stories take place at the same time
Intertwining their lives together
on the 13th Floor.

It’s a Collection I Keep Reading Over and Over. Each novella is written about a tenant who lives on the ‘non-existent’ 13th Floor 13flrof a ‘haunted’ apartment building. Although each novella could be read as a stand alone, because of the skill Ms. Rains has in connecting these stories into one phenomenal read, I HIGHLY recommend treating yourself to the collection. Each story is woven into every other story in some small way creating a bigger picture. At the end, all I could say to myself was, ‘That was amazing; I want to write like that. How did she do it?’

If you’re into stories of the supernatural, then you will love this; vampire demons seeking redemption, mix in some werewolves, dragon slayers, banshees, and ghosts, oh my!!

The characters in each story were well-developed and fleshed out. I became invested in their lives, turning the pages and needing to know what finally happens. The stories all flow well and readers stay engaged. Ms. Rains makes it a point not to use superfluous words in her work that could draw readers out. Kudos to her editors; I was hard pressed to find any grammatical or spelling errors in this work.

I’m not ashamed to admit that I’ve become addicted to her stories…particularly The Marquis (sigh) I hope Ms. Rains releases another collection soon. I’ll be waiting.

Again, The 13th Floor Complete Collection Series – Five Stars *****

Have a great day all! I’ll post more reviews shortly.
