Book Review – DEFYING REASON

Hello all! It’s time for another book review! Today I’m going to review a New Adult / Romance called Defying Reason by Elizabeth Seckman. I read it while I was feeling incredibly crappy and I’m glad I did. It’s probably one of the few things that put a smile on my face for the nearly three weeks I was sick.

defy-reasonTitle:  DEFYING REASON

Author:  Elizabeth Seckman

Genre:  New Adult / Romance

Rating:  ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥/♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ 4.5

Here’s the Blurb:

Jo Leigh Harper comes from a long line of trouble-making, white trash stock.
Tanner Coulter comes from a longer line of wealth-creating, blue blood stock.
Jo graduated college top of her class, moving toward a future full of possibilities.
Tanner dropped out of college, trading a law degree for drinking games and one night stands.
A family crisis throws the rich party boy and the poor genius girl together. The attraction is immediate, though neither one is a heart-in-the-sand-drawing believer in true love. But as the summer sun heats up along the shores of the Outer Banks, so does the connection between them. Maybe, just maybe, they can win at love by defying reason.

My Review:

As I mentioned, I read this when I wasn’t feeling well and this read couldn’t have come at a better time. There were parts where I couldn’t help but laugh out loud at some of the goings on in this book.

Jo Leigh’s life is turned upside down when her flighty, dysfunctional mom Gayle moves them to the Outer Banks of North Carolina because Gayle’s childhood friend Jenna sells her a cottage dirt cheap in exchange for helping her family out during a family crisis. She also wants to keep Jo away from her no good, verbally abusive boyfriend, Brad. Of course Jo wants no part of this, but she doesn’t have much choice until she starts Med school in the fall.

Tanner Coulter is a spoiled rich kid who loves to party and is flunking out of college. His father, Tres Coulter, finally puts an end to it. In one fell swoop, Tanner loses his sports car, credit card, checking account, and the friend with benefits, Becca, who dumps him right before Daddy shows up. Not knowing what to do, he calls his dad as he’s driving away and tells him he wants to go home.  He thinks it’ll be parties at the beach and hot chicks, but Dad feels he needs to learn responsibility. In order to earn back his car, he must work on the family’s cottage that his mom Jenna just sold to her friend Gayle. Uh-huh. You see where I’m going, right? 🙂

Their initial meetings are somewhat awkward, but Jo and Tanner quickly form a friendship that evolves into something deeper. Of course, there are secrets and drama and deceit… Oh, my! But, unfortunately, I can’t give any of that away because I don’t do spoilers.

The characters felt real and I could relate to them, especially Jo. Her character was well fleshed out physically, emotionally, and psychologically. Though she is beautiful, she has flaws and insecurities that we see manifest throughout the novel. I can’t help but root for her because she’s angry at her circumstances and her mother is a train wreck, always chasing after her ‘donor’ father.

The other characters were given distinct personalities and voices, as well. I could relate to most of them in some form or another. Except Becca. No. Just no.

I didn’t notice any spelling or grammatical errors. I liked the way the chapters alternated between Jo and Tanner’s point-of-view.

My only complaint, if you can call it one, is the ending. When I read a book, I like to imagine what the future holds. That’s just a personal preference; I don’t know how others feel.

Overall, I loved this book and gave it 4.5 out of five hearts. (I always round-up), so it still looks like 5/5.  🙂 I took a half-heart off because of the ending; otherwise, it would’ve gotten a full five out of five hearts from me.

That’s it for my review today! I should have another one coming up soon! Until then everyone…

~*~EXCERPT~*~

I reached out and grabbed her, wrapping my arms around her waist. She resisted,

pushing and punching my arms and shoulders. I wanted her to fight me. To hit me and scream and show me what I did to her.

After a while, she collapsed in my arms, exhausted from fighting, but her sobs continued for several more minutes. My neck and chest dampened from her tears, and her whole body convulsed when she released an uncontrollable series of coughs. It shook us both, but I held on tight. The vibration of our bodies glued together made me hard, and I found it difficult to concentrate. I tried to push those thoughts out of my head. I wanted her to understand.

It tore me up to know I caused her an ounce of pain. I held her tight with one arm and stroked her back with the other. Each stroke, her body softened. When her last bit of energy drained, I turned us around and her back was up against my car. I placed my hands on her hips; she whimpered as I lifted her and sat her on the trunk.

Her damp hair stuck to her face, and I pushed it away. I wiped her eyes and lifted her chin.

“How could you leave me like that?” she asked. The desperation in her voice

fucked with my mind. I hated myself.

“I’m sorry,” I whispered as my lips sweep across her cheek. She tensed. I

expressed my gratitude by kissing her other cheek. She whimpered, and my heart

cracked.

I kissed her forehead, dropped my hands to her waist, and her head fell forward without my support.

“Why?” she asked. Her voice sounded defeated, but defiant. She wanted an

answer. She deserved an answer.

“Since I meet you, I’ve had the time of my life.” I kissed her jawline as I placed

my hands on her thighs. “I’ve never met anyone like you before.” As my lips moved to her ear, she leaned into me. I pushed her legs apart. I wanted to hold her, get closer to her. She relaxed more with every kiss. “I want to be with you so bad.” When I reached her earlobe, I bit it, and she moaned. “But eventually you’re going to leave me.”

Good morning bloggers! I’m part of a wonderful blog tour helping to promote the lovely Sydney Aaliyah Michelle’s new book, Another New Life, which is set to be released on June 2nd.  AnotherNewLifeCoverAs you all know, I love to read. 🙂 In addition to taking part in the cover reveal a couple of weeks ago, I’m also taking part in the blog tour by posting a review of Another New Life right here on my blog. Please be advised that I received an Advanced Reader Copy in exchange for an honest review. I try hard not to do spoilers in any of my reviews.

I gave ANL Four out of Five Stars ****/*****

I enjoyed this book from the beginning; the tension was obvious to me when Miranda took that first phone call from her parents that she needed to be away. Her starting school at UT was supposed to be a new beginning for her. She was leaving behind a past that was haunting her and had damaged her throughout her teenage years. She befriends her Southern belle roommate Darcy and a couple of other girls, and they have their own little circle.

It’s during her first day of Calculus that Miranda notices the ‘perfect guy’ walk into class. He was the star quarterback, but he looked familiar. It turned out that he was her best friend from when they were very young, Troy. After the initial shock of recognition, they meet-up after class for coffee and reminiscing.

They talk about how Miranda’s parents  moved away eight years earlier and how upset they’d been. Now that they were both ‘grown’, there was an immediate attraction, and they began to date. Miranda stressed their new relationship constantly because she wasn’t ready to tell Troy some of the secrets of her past because she knew they would crush him. There were times when Miranda would zone out and Troy would sense that something was off and was completely understanding and didn’t push her at all.

I loved the fact that Miranda’s story comes out little by little throughout the book. There’s no info dump at the beginning that leaves me wondering, “What just happened?” I loved that Troy’s character remained, for the most part (no spoilers) a good guy who was looking out for the best interests of his once best friend and now ‘girlfriend’.

Aside from some minor grammatical errors (don’t go by me, I could have had an uncorrected proof, I’d have to check), overall I definitely recommend this as a to be read.
