#IWSG – ABOUT MY WRITING…

Hello, all! It’s the first Wednesday of the month and we know what that means:

IWSG-badgeIt’s time for another meeting of the Insecure Writers Support Group – #IWSG.

My hero, the amazing Ninja Captain Alex J. Cavanaugh founded this group and it has become a safe haven if you are an insecure writer.

Click the image if you would like to be a part of the #IWSG family. You won’t regret it.

Purpose: To share and encourage. Writers can express doubts and concerns without fear of appearing foolish or weak.

The awesome co-hosts for the June 7 posting of the IWSG will be JH Moncrieff, Madeline Mora-Summonte, Jen Chandler, Megan Morgan, and Heather Gardner!

June 3 Question: Did you ever say “I quit”? If so, what happened to make you come back to writing?

I have thought about quitting many times and have gone as far as ignoring it for months (even years) at a time. But I always come back. I love writing. Over the past few years I submitted a couple of short stories that never made the cut. It was (and still is) disappointing but I have to just get up, brush myself off, and keep trying. That’s the hardest part and one of the main reasons I haven’t submitted anything for a long while.

I hope that I’ll build up the nerve again this year. We’ll see. That’s a post for another day. There’s a lot going on in my life now and it’s the main reason I haven’t blogged in so long. Speaking for both this blog and My Miracle Life, I realize it doesn’t make sense for me to try keeping a regular posting schedule because I never know what’s going to pop up and surprise me. I’ll have to take things day by day and pray for the best.

What do you do when you feel like quitting? If you’ve already quit, what do you think would motivate you to return to writing? I’m seriously curious.

So, it happened again. Life, that is. This time it hit me harder than usual. I’ve checked my stats and I haven’t written a post here since February. Eeep! When I was feeling great, I set up an entire ‘blog schedule’ of when I would be posting. I have to say ‘In my dreams’ right about now. My heart is hurting because of it, but I know that it couldn’t be helped. That fact should make me feel better. Does it? Nope.

Everything’s been on hold for the past couple of months and I don’t like it one bit. I’m not going to rehash details here because I said enough on my other blog, My Miracle Life. Now, as I’ve done in the past, I’m cleaning out my email accounts (tons of email!), trying to catch up on reading for reviews, writing out some blog posts and trying to carve out time for social media. Yipes.

I usually say it is what it is, but I hate saying that. I want it to be better and I want to be able to achieve what I want to achieve, obstacles be damned.

Any ideas on how I can make this happen? I sure could use the help.

I’ll be reviewing Woman on the Verge of Paradise, by popular and hysterically funny blogger Robyn Alana Engel.

TITLE: WOMAN ON THE VERGE OF PARADISE

AUTHOR: ROBYN ALANA ENGEL

GENRE: MEMOIR/HUMOR

MY RATING: ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥/♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥

4.5/5 HEARTS

BOOK BLURB:

She’s 4 feet, 8 inches of heartfelt ferocity, and nothing can stop this post-pubescent spitfire from claiming her fairytale–not jarring tragedy, not penile incompetence, not even the explosive demise of a new marriage. Not until Robyn finds her happily ever after…alone.

MY REVIEW:

As soon as I read the beginning where Robyn states who the book is NOT intended for, I knew I was going to enjoy it. Martha Stewart? You’d have to read her blog to get it.

Ms. Engel writes about her life growing up in a popular middle class Jewish family where all the neighborhood kids loved to gather. She writes about suffering emotional abuse throughout her childhood, not understanding it for what it was at the time.

She shares with us her journey, as she stumbles along in life trying to find her place, and her prince charming. We’re treated to the kind of humor that only Robyn can dish out. Her dating escapades are truly ‘one for the books’. I found myself laughing out loud more than once trying to picture myself a fly on the wall on some of these ‘dates’.

Robyn writes openly and honestly about the good and bad events that have happened in her life. For as much as I laughed, there were also moments I was near tears. The loss of her mother from cancer had a huge impact; I know it well.

Included in the book are excerpts from diaries she’s kept over the years. This memoir is poignant, yet funny. We’re even treated to a bit of Jewish culture, tradition, and language – Okay, Bubushka? Cue: “I’m NOT your Russian Grandmother!” LOL!

If you have an aversion to profanity being used in the telling of one’s story, or are narrow-minded in your views of the world around you, this may not be the book for you. For anyone that can relate to a life of seeking love, acceptance, and to finally finding some peace – I say get it!

MY RATING: ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥/♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

EngelRThis 4 foot, 8 inch spitfire hails from California. She’s an author, a poet, and addicted to all things chocolate. Woman on the Verge of Paradise marks Robyn’s mission to shift literature away from the fairytale and towards self-love and respect –gently, humorously, and with a side of deep dark chocolate. Warning: If you don’t find the chocolate, that’s because Robyn already did.

Check out her blog: LIFE BY CHOCOLATE. If you don’t, you’ll be missing out on a good thing!

Impromptu Jam Session Brings Unity…It Can Happen! Watch

Hey bloggers! It’s another hot day in Connecticut, but I’ve managed to get writing done yesterday and today, between all the appointments I had to make. While checking my Facebook, I came across a Jimmy Kimmel video that a friend of mine posted and it inspired me so much that I wrote over five thousand words between yesterday and today. 🙂 Anyone that knows me understands what a challenge that is.

I’m posting the video here so you can hear for yourselves how one person playing guitar outside a dollar store incited two other men to join him in an impromptu jam session as a bystander was taping it. The young man who taped the session on his phone posted it on his Facebook and it went viral. After viewing it, you will understand why. Enjoy.

Not only does music bring back memories of good times past, music unites everyone regardless of creed, religion, sexual orientation, political affiliation, gender, financial situation, color, and race. I’m far from perfect, but I like to think I’ve raised my daughter to live judgement free of others based on the above. I believe I did good. 🙂

The differences in our cultures, musical and written inspiration, and lifestyles make for interesting conversation, amazing music and storytelling. ~ Eva E. Solar

I wouldn’t have it any other way. My wish is that we as a world could be as united as everyone is this video was.  Thinking about it, it really isn’t that difficult.

I’m just sayin’…

This is my little contribution for today. Now I think I’m going to write a couple thousand words more. Until next time, Hugs to you all!!!
